Santa Cruz Island Camping / Hiking Trip

Saturday, Jan. 3 - Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026

Santa Cruz Island | $70

Join us for a two day, one night, camping/hiking trip to Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park! The island features amazing coastline views, beaches and hills, amazing wildlife (potentially whales!) and many trails for all different experience levels.

We plan to depart Saturday, early in the morning in order to catch the morning ferry from Ventura, and return to campus in the evening on Sunday. Students are given priority and sign-ups are first come, first served.

* The subsidized cost of $70 covers the ferry, camping, and meals on the island. You may want some funds for quick stops to and from Ventura, and please plan to contribute toward carpool expenses ($25 recommended).

Stargazing Trip to Mojave National Preserve

Saturday, Jan. 17 (8 am departure) - Monday, Jan. 19, 2026 (early afternoon return)

Mojave National Preserve | $20

Join the Caltech Y Outdoors on a long-weekend camping and stargazing trip to the Mojave National Preserve! Enjoy stargazing at night, away from city lights, and by day, exploring a desert environment with sand dunes, Joshua trees, petroglyphs, and lava tubes.

Come prepared with sturdy hiking footwear, plenty of warm clothing and layers (it gets cold at night!), at least 3L of water bottle capacity for hiking, sun protection, and a mess kit (or a container and utensils). The $20 cost covers camping equipment, including tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads, if needed, and camping meals (including vegetarian and vegan options). Please inform the Y and trip leaders of any allergies.

Transportation is not provided, but we will help organize carpools before the trip. Please be prepared to chip in ~$30-40 to the drivers for round-trip gas costs, in addition to the $20 trip fee.

Students are given priority and spaces are limited, so be sure to complete and submit all signup forms as soon as possible. Once spaces fill up, all subsequent signups will be placed on a waitlist. We will inform folks on the waitlist if spaces become available. Please reach out to Y Outdoors leaders Ria (riar@caltech.edu), Rithvik (rrameh@caltech.edu), Satvik (sgkumar@caltech.edu), or Tim (timproudkii@caltech.edu) if you have any questions.
