This November, California voters will cast their votes for Governor, Congressional seats, and numerous California ballot propositions and initiatives. Join us for a non-partisan overview provided by representatives from the Pasadena League of Women Voters, dialogue with other participants, and become a more informed voter as you prepare to cast your ballot. Hosted by the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity and the Caltech Y.
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan political organization (never supporting or opposing any political party or candidate) that encourages informed and active participation in government. The LWV carries out two separate and distinct roles: Voter Service / Citizen Education, presenting unbiased information (like they will at our lunch), and Advocacy in some cases, after study, take positions for or against particular policies.
Participate in monthly science demonstrations at a local elementary school with Pasadena LEARNs. We will lead hands-on engineering projects, chemistry experiments, and other interactive activities to engage local students in STEM.
The animals may have left the Old LA Zoo decades ago, but some say their spirits never did! Hidden in the hills of Griffith Park, the abandoned zoo is filled with empty cages, forgotten enclosures, and a mysterious past. Rumors suggest that the old zoo is haunted, with the cries of animals still echoing through the grounds at night. This Halloween, join us as we venture through the ruins to discover what creatures might still be lurking in the shadows! We'll continue along the surrounding trails for a total of 3–5 miles of hiking with 500-700 feet elevation gain.
Transportation is not provided so you must have your own transportation or carpool with others. A group list will be sent out for those wishing to do so. The hike is free, but you should plan to contribute for gas. We will depart from the Caltech Y at 9 am and return around 1 pm. Look for a confirmation email with more details and logistics. Professor Alvarez is the Flintridge Professor of Political and Computational Social Science at Caltech, Co-Director of the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project, and Co-Director of the Linde Center for Science, Society, and Policy. He is a fellow of the Society for Political Methodology and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been recognized for his mentoring work, both at Caltech by the Graduate Student Council (twice) and by the Society for Political Methodology. He also received the Emerging Scholar Award in the Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Section of the American Political Science Association in 2001.

The Los Angeles area has an abundance of great hiking – from our adjacent Griffith Park and San Gabriel Mountains to the Santa Monica, San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains beyond – there is so much to choose from. There is also a wide range of intensity levels - from the mellow stroll to the rigorous challenge - so everyone from the novice to the seasoned adventurer can find their adventure.

Join us for an exploration into science policy in the nation's capital! Our five-day trip includes lodgings, and most meals, flights - if you choose, educational discussions, and of course the opportunity to see Washington, D.C. landmarks like the White House, National Mall Memorials, Smithsonian Museums, and the Capital.

Tutor Pasadena & Altadena youth ages 11-18, one-on-one or in small groups as part of the Youth of Promise (YOP) program.
YWCA Glendale and Pasadena’s TechGYRLS® program seeks to empower young girls in the areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and to encourage them to pursue careers within these fields. TechGYRLS® is a place to dream, explore new ideas, learn new skills, and be creative through STEAM activities.
We’re seeking volunteers to guide girls through projects and learning on the Caltech campus. Volunteers can attend every session or drop in when available. Email caltechy@caltech.edu to get started!
Support K–5th grade students with reading and homework help.
Reading Partners’ mission is to help children become lifelong readers. Volunteers are matched with a student and meet weekly to improve reading skills.
The NCNWA’s Young Legends program is seeking volunteers to provide online math and science tutoring for students ages 11–18. Tutors meet with students on Zoom for either 1 hour each week or 2 hours every other week.
