The Big Island of Hawai'i
The Caltech Y is excited to announce an ASB trip to Hawaiʻi. Join other Caltech students on one of our non-traditional spring break experiences on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi where we will explore the complex relationships between humans and nature while learning responsible stewardship practices from Indigenous, specifically Kānaka ‘Ōiwi (Native Hawaiian) and contemporary knowledge systems and values.
We will travel to Hawaiʻi Island and explore multiple diverse environments ranging from sea-level to the alpine zone (7,000 to 10,000 ft. in elevation). Students will enjoy a rustic cabin camping experience at campgrounds in protected conservation lands and see some of the spectacular scenery Hawaiʻi has to offer.
Through guided facilitation, students will be allowed to access pristine conservation land and learn from cultural experts. Our group will participate in service work, engaging in endemic/native plant restoration, and learn from Native scientists about the sustained observation of diverse environments that create storied land, ocean, and skyscapes of Hawaiʻi Island. The goal of this co-learning is to demonstrate the reciprocal relations of kānaka (humans) and ʻāina (the land).
Roundtrip Option ($1800): Travel with the group on Sunday, March 22nd and Friday, March 27th
One-Way Option ($1450):* Travel with the group to Hawaiʻi on Sunday, March 22nd - OR - return to Caltech with the group on Friday, March 27th
* One-way means you arrange your own transportation to or from Hawai'i.
Trips fees include transportation, lodging, and most food. The Hawaii Alternative Spring Break trip is coordinated by the Caltech Y and has been made possible thanks to generous funding from the Frank and Elsie Stefanko Fund, the George Housner Fund, Caltech Student Affairs, and the Caltech Y.
